Versailles - how much time to devote to it?

we are in paris for july 12, 13, and 14...

we get in the morning of the 12th and then leave for st. tropez on the morning of the 15th. so that leaves only friday the 13th to see versailles.

do we need a full day? what is the best way to get there from the city - we are staying at the four seasons....

should we go in the morning or go in the late afternoon?

thanks for any ideas!

We took an early train from St. Michel, got to Versailles right when it opened, 9 or 9:30, can%26#39;t remember. We did have to stand in line. We walked everywhere, down to the Trianon and the Hamlet, all around the gardens (we went on a Wednesday), took the tram back to the chateau from Marie Antoinette%26#39;s village (really wasn%26#39;t much to see there)...we were back in Paris by 3 pm...

If you have been to Paris previously, or if Versailles is at the top of your places to see list, spend half a day there. You may be surprised at how fast 2 and a half days go by in Paris alone.

if this is your first trip to Paris, I would not waste your very very limited time on Versailles -- unless Versailles is something you have always dreamed of seeing

there is so much Paris and so little time -- the gardens of Versailles are wonderful -- but Paris is filled with wonderful gardens -- the palace itself is wonderful -- but Paris is filled with wonderful buildings including the Louvre

we made Versailles an all day trip -- had a picnic etc -- the grounds are more impressive in many ways than the building -- you could do a half day trip if you didn%26#39;t do much with the grounds

but save it for the next trip would be my advice

we are also in a similar situaiton, had a short stay at Paris (2 full and 2 half days) and still wanted to include Versailles. We went there in the afternoon after lunching at the Eiffel tower, it was only 25 minutes or so directly on RER C from ET to Versailles. We were there around 4, had museum pass so did not have to wait in line, toured the Chateau and Gardens, took a half hour tram ride without getting off, and left around 7. We did not visit the trianons through. We were travelling with kids so pace was slower.

we are planning to visit Versailles on saturday the 14th so we can see the fountain show - i%26#39;m not sure if it goes on on Fridays, so you might want to double-check if that%26#39;s important to you. we%26#39;re hoping to be back in Paris by late afternoon so we can be part of some of the Bastille Day festivities, but otherwise felt it would be a good day to AVOID the city!

I love Versailles. I think it is worth seeing, even on a short trip. You need to determine for yourself, though, what are your priorities for your trip.

On our trip a couple of weeks ago, we were in Paris for 3 days and one of those days was spent partly at Versailles. We got there at 1:00, toured the chateau, walked to the Trianons and toured the Petite Trianon and Marie Antoinette%26#39;s village. We walked back to the Chateau by 6:30. We had our 3 kids (ages 10,12,14) with us. It can be done. I%26#39;d been there once before which helped some. We all felt like we had enough time and enjoyed it. Well, except for the pushy tour groups...

When I went (4 days ago!) it was raining, so I couldn%26#39;t view the gardens, Grand %26amp; Petite Trianon, and the Grand Canal. I DID take the train they have. Thus, my day at Versailles was only half of a day. Personally, I don%26#39;t think a full day is worth it. The palace is beautiful, but so big. After a while, all of the gild and paintings get old.

If you do decide to do it, I recommend getting the audio guide. I did on my first visit and thought it was informative. On this recent visit, we used the Rick Steves tour found in his guidebook. It was helpful but not as informative as the audio guide. It%26#39;s nice to know what you%26#39;re looking at!!
