Los Angeles to Bordeaux region - travel/flight/train advice?

Hi all, I%26#39;ll be visiting family in the bordeaux regon next summer. I%26#39;ll be flying out of LAX (hopefully overnight direct flight to london.. or similar) an may have a day or two extra to see a city in europe along the way.

Anybody have advice on flights/airlines? Also perhaps advice on a route to take on my way there. IE, flight to london, flight to paris.. see paris.. take train to bordeaux, rent a car... etc.

I%26#39;ve never been to europe, and unfortunately will only be there about 9 or 10 days to visit family, but I%26#39;m trying to make the most of it, and spend the least.
