How to get to Versailles?

We will be in Paris for a Sunday and Monday in early September and would like to squeeze in a visit to Versailles on the Sunday. Our hotel is near the Franklin D. Roosevelt metro. What%26#39;s the best way to get to Versailles from there?

I would walk down Avenue Franklin D Roosevelt across the Pont des Invalides to Invalides RER station. If you have mobility problems or just dont want to walk, take a taxi from your hotel to Invalides RER. Using the metro from FDR Metro station to an RER C line station is a fiddle and not worth it IMO.

Take RER Line C - I know the westbound trains that have the name %26quot;VICK%26quot; on the front go to Versailles but I read on a post (by kdk I think) that any train with a name starting with V will get you there.

Just so you know, some stations have unmanned ticket kiosks on weekends,, we found that to be so when we took the train on a sunday in august to Versailles. This is not a huge issue, there are ticket machines to you, but since our CC was not chipped it was not accepted by the machine. Luckily a British couple paid for our tickets with their CC and we just gave them the cash. This was two summers ago, so perhaps it is different now.We are going again in August so I will post and let you know how it went this time!

The overwhelming majority of trains that run on the RER %26#39;C-5%26#39; ligne from stations in Paris to VERSAILLES-Rive Gauche are designated %26#39;..VICK..%26#39;...but there are several that are designated %26#39;..VERO..%26#39;. So it%26#39;s just simpler to remember %26#39;..V..%26#39;for %26#39;..Versailles..%26#39;...amid all of tthe other %26#39;C%26#39; ligne train route designations (%26#39;C-1%26#39; %26amp; %26#39;C-7%26#39;) that you might encounter in a Left Bank %26#39;C%26#39; ligne station and be done with it.

The same works with other frequented RER lignes---RER %26#39;A-4%26#39; ligne out to MARNE LA VALLEE-CHESSY for DisneyLand Paris...with %26#39;..Q xxx..%26#39; and out to MELUN and Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte with %26#39;..Z xxx..%26#39; (though how one rmight associate %26#39;..Q..%26#39; for DisneyLand..%26#39; or %26#39;..Z..%26#39; for Vaux le Vicomte..%26#39; quite escapes me).

Gare Montparnasse is the best option, you can purcahse a package deal which includes the train tickets and admission into versaille. The train ride was about 25 minutes and then a 10 minute walk from the station in Versaille to the palace.

Having your tickets in advance means that you don%26#39;t have the join the long lines for tickets are Versaille.

If you visit the www.sncf.com you can see the options.

This is what brewster refers to:

The same one-day VERSAILLES PASS (includes round-trip transportaion ticket %26amp; admission ticket) is also available at all of the Left Bank RER %26#39;C%26#39; ligne station (Gare Austerlitz, Saint Michel-Notre Dame, Musée d%26#39;Orsay, Invalides, Pont d%26#39;Alma, Champ du Mars-Tour Eiffel) ticket booths....and these RER %26#39;C%26#39; ligne stations may be more convenient to wherever you happen to be in Paris.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. It looks fairly straightforward.
