Annecy in mid May to early June

We would like to spend two weeks or so in the region in mid may to early June. How is the weather generally at that time. How are the crowds? Are there better places in the area? Are there mountain hikes easily accessible? Can we get around by train or public transport(prefer no car-do you advise one?).

We like to hike and tour, also bike. I have never been to Annecy, but am fluent in French.

My wife is vegetarian-how is the food?

Wow, plenty of questions !

1) I would prefer June to enjoy swimming in the lake (in May water can be still cold). The weather is generally very nice in June, warm but not hot. It is very crowded in July and August, but June is OK.

2) Do you want to stay in a hotel or look for a self catering rental ? And tell a little more about your budget to get advices.

3) You will enjoy cycling on the bike paths and will find a lot of mountain hikes., also a famous via ferrata.

Have a look on previous posts on this forum, links are not only useful for kids:

You should also browse this website that is very useful :

4) As long as you stay near the lake you won%26#39;t need a car as the region is very bike friendly. But I think it will be better to have a car if you want to go to the mountains.

My wife and I lived in Annecy for the entire month of June 2006.

We had a car and if you want to go hiking in the mountains you%26#39;ll need the car to get to the trails. There are lots of trails in the mountains all around the lake with the most interesting, to me, being on the east side. An excellent guidebook to hiking in the area is %26quot;Randonnées autour du lac d%26#39;Annecy.%26quot; I bought it at amazon.fr. Since you speak French...

BTW, I wouldn%26#39;t want to drive around Annecy itself, you can walk or bike. But the car will be handy to get to hikes.

When we arrived last year it was colder than normal and there was more snow than normal for the time of year. But June was quite hot (in the thirties) the entire month. Daytime temps are usually mid twenties. Weather is typically pretty good then, but afternoon thunderstorms aren%26#39;t unusual.

Crowds aren%26#39;t bad then - it is busy, but not like during peak tourist season. We never once had a problem getting a table for either lunch or dinner.

Speaking of food, I have never looked into vegetarian food in France. The old town in Annecy has plenty of good restaurants. Several have good Savoyarde cuisine, which is heavy on the cheese. But other than that I didn%26#39;t find dining in Annecy to be any more or less limited in variety than any other similarly-sized community I%26#39;ve been to in France. There are several creperies, there%26#39;s Arab food, pizza and all the stuff you normally find in French towns.

BTW, we ate out two meals per day every day for 42 days. We loved it; it was a great experience, But man, was I glad to come home and just stick something in the microwave now and then!
