Driving from Paris to Provence--where to stay?

Our family of three (me, my husband, and our 11-yr-old son) will be driving from Paris to Provence, where we%26#39;ll be spending 2 weeks in the Luberon. Any advice about what%26#39;s good to see along our route (probably through Lyon, but not carved in stone) and where to stay on the night we%26#39;ll be between Paris and Provence, would be greatly appreciated. Also, information about how long this drive should take and how far we can reasonably expect to get the first day would be nice to know (we%26#39;ll be leaving CDG airport in early afternoon after seeing our 19-yr-old son off, who%26#39;s flying back to the States after our week in Paris).

If you plan to make a stopover in Lyon, I will be happy to help you. Lyon is a very interesting and beautiful town, due to its two rivers and two hills and to its rich history; the entire city center is a UNESCO Heritage Site.

Only-Lyon: Thanks, we might indeed decide to check out Lyon. Where would you advise staying if we do stop there? Is there an interesting hotel or other accommodation you%26#39;d recommend that would be in the %26quot;special%26quot; category for just one night?

For one night, you should consider a place with easy parking. What is your price range (or how many stars ?) ?

|||

Good suggestion about easy parking; I would also think easy to get into and out of would be good as well, so maybe not smack in the middle of the city center, but on the outskirts? You%26#39;re the expert, though, so I%26#39;ll bow to your advice. Our price range would be about 100-125 Euros/night, but we could also splurge, especially since we need a room/rooms big enough for the 3 of us.

I think it would be better to be able to visit Lyon on foot, ie leave your car in the parking and take it back the following day.

The Royal Hotel is very easy to find but is a little over the budget you gave me; have a look on their site as they have special offers (check with your dates, I checked for one night mid-July, your son will be free in the room for 140 €).

A cheaper hotel is the Hotel des Artistes, nice location in the city center and there is a public parking right in front of it (the most beautiful parking you have never seen, I am sure!). You will pay 90 to 120 € according to the type of room, but you%26#39;ll have to check if they have a triple room.

we made this trip recently and stayed in Vienne on the Rhone south of Lyon -- we wanted to avoid the big city and Lyon is huge -- but we regret not seeing it

Vienne was pretty cool -- a small town on the Rhone, lots of small hotels, in the morning we had breakfast on the town square and then walked around visiting the various Roman ruins e.g. there is a huge ampitheater, a well preserved Temple and other ruins all conveniently in a short walk in town -- across the river are archeological digs but we didn%26#39;t look at those

We were staying near Bedoin with friends who have a cottage on the slopes of Mt. Ventou and this was a good stopping point to get us into the area and arrive mid afternoon (of course if we hadn%26#39;t spent time in Vienne in the morning, we would have been in earlier)

On the return trip to Paris we stayed at a small hotel near Avalon which was terrific

Can recommend a lovely hotel/restaurant just south of Beaune that we have used as a break on the way south for a few years.

Owner is a really good cook and his wife runs the restaurant %26amp; hotel. V friendly stopover or have a couple of nights and explore the area!

Beaune for Hotel Dieu %26amp; the wine villages of the region are worth spending time exploring on your way south if your interests are in that direction.

Lyon is perfectly possible to reach comfortably - 4/5 hours.
