Today-One of My Best Days EVER in Paris

So, I%26#39;m staying in Bercy Village (I know, kinda far away) in a so-so hotel.

It was a beautiful Sunday and I decided to take my running shoes with me on this trip so at 11:15 am this morning, I started out from Bercy Village and ran up the Seine. I went through Parc Bercy. Very nice. I stopped at the ruins of Gare Austerlitz (yes, ruins - they took a beautiful building and ruined it) past the Gardens (Jardin des Plants, I think its called). There are wonderful statues, buildings, and gardens all along the way.

What a beautiful day. Low humidity, light cloud cover.

I jogged across the bridge over to Ile St. Louis and ran through the streets, watching the people come out of church, then saw some others eating their Berthillon ice cream. As I crossed over the Pont Ile St Louis there was a great jazz band playing so I stopped for 10 minutes or so.

As I got over to Ile de la Cite, it was getting crowded and it was fun to dodge the people in the street. I ran across the Parvis and Quasimodo rang the bells for me.

I continued on past the Conciergerie and St Chapelle. I cut through the Place Dauphine (hey, what happened to that restaurant, Taverne Henry IV - its still closed?).

Cut across the Pont Nuef (I hope I have my bridges right) and ran all the way back to Bercy Village. I guess the total trip was 6-7 km which I could never run if I were not inspired by the streets of Paris.

It really loved it. You get to see some things you would never see if you took the metro or the bus.

Oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhh ! I am so jealous !! I love to run in Paris and I did a few times on my last trip in October, but not as often as I wanted to. It was such an empowering feeling to me to be doing something so, hum, %26quot;strange%26quot; in Paris. I have to say that because unless I was in a park, in a 5 K run, I may have only ran into a couple other people running !! When my girlfriend (and owner to my gym) came to visit me in Paris, that is how she saw Paris-running every day !!! It was October and she would run out in her tiny short, shorts every morning and she wondered why she got so many looks !! Anyway, you just have to love Paris on foot, and somehow running through adds a different perspective.

Well, after your tough flight over, I am sure your beautiful day was a much needed reward !! Have a great time soaking up the sun !!

Thanks for this post! I don%26#39;t run (although my husband has a cute story about his first trip to Paris, when he went down to the water level to run along the Seine and was %26quot;interruped%26quot; -- although very nicely -- by a disapproving fisherman), but I do love to walk and for exactly the same reasons about the way one sees the city.

I%26#39;m curious -- I would not have thought of staying in the Bercy area. Do you mind sharing what made you chose it as a base?

|||

Pix,

Why do you stay Taverne Henri IV is still closed? DIdn%26#39;t know it was closed? What time did you go past ? Maybe they just weren%26#39;t open yet?

|||

I did run by the Taverne Henry IV on a Sunday, so maybe that%26#39;s why it was closed. But when I was in Paris either last February or in March of %26#39;06 it was closed during my entire trip. Maybe it%26#39;s just a coincidence. I%26#39;ll go by it today.

I%26#39;m staying in Bercy because the *%26amp;%$#@%26amp; air show has booked up nearly every room in Paris. It%26#39;s a nice area, but it is not like staying in the Latin Quarter.

And after my run, I topped it off by going to McD%26#39;s on Boul Mich, and having a mini-picnic in the gardens across the street at the Cluny. It was fabulous. And I didn%26#39;t feel guilty because of all the running I did.

Dinner was at Chartiers. It was quite good. They raised their prices a little, so there were less crowds and I think they upped the quality just a bit.

Tonight (Monday) I have a restaurant surprise coming up. My Parisian friend is taking me to her most recent discovery.

How delightful to read that your day turned out so well! I hope you have more pleasant days like that one, Pixfield.

Hey Magic, it sounds like I may RUN into you because I plan to to to Paris from mid Sept- October. With any luck and if it is even close to last year, it should be PERFECT running weather and even better than summer !!

|||

oh, pixfield, can%26#39;t wait to hear about your surprise dinner !! Have fun so you can make us all a little more jealous tomorrow !

Pix!

20 years ago (in my marathon runnung days) I devised a project to run all 34 bridges in Paris across the Seine. It took 3 days (about an hour each morning) to make all but two. On the way I was also approached by a man who said I should %26quot;cool it--Jim Fixx met his demise that way%26quot;. I didn%26#39;t take the time to explain that Jim%26#39;s life was probab;y extended for quite a few years through his running......

A great way to see so much of the city in a short time. I%26#39;d follow it up by visiting some of the places I had run by.

Enjoy your stay and continue to report while I enjoy it vicariously!!

So did you decide not to go to JH dinner?
