Two days spent in Carcassonne

We have just spent two days in Carcassonne. We took a bus from the airport straight to the hotel. The bus driver got off the bus to point us in the right direction. We stayed at the Hotel du Pont Vieux which is only a five minute walk up to the medieval city, and so had a good view of it from our window. We walked to the town, walked along the canal and visited the medieval city several times. There were a lot of restaurants to choose from and during Wednesday the sun was out and it was warm enough to enjoy a coffee out in the square. We also had time to walk around the vineyards. We look forward to returning later in the year.

Yes the bus was waiting outside the arrivals door.It was 5euros each to the centre. We got a taxi back to the airport because we had a 10.15 flight back and that was 15euros. The hotel du Pont Vieux is a two star, very old with beams and a spiral staircase. We had a room on the 2nd floor with a view and a large bathroom. Staff friendly and good breakfast (66 euros with breakfast a night),also 5 min. walk away from the walled city. Worked out a cheap two day break as we got cheap flights too.

Hi, we are going to C in June for 5 days - should we stay the whole 5 days actually in C and venture forth from a base - maybe your hotel - or should we go further afield? I do not know France at all, and would appreciate some info? many thanks.

Would you rec your hotel?

Thanks again.

Hi Maggiemoon1

We only spent two days in Carcassonne and felt we had seen all there was to see in that area, which we did enjoy tho. If I was going for longer I would like to stay in the walled medieval city, but in June it will be more crowded, or maybe two days in Carcassonne and a few days further away. Apart from the walled city there wasnt a lot more in that area, we found anyway. Hope this helps.

Just to add the hotel we stayed in Pont View, was very old and quirky, typically french, dark and some beams in a side road, five minutes walk to the cite. The walls were a bit grubby, but a big bathroom and comfy clean bed and very quiet at night. Also our room had a fabulous view from the window. it was £50 a night with a good breakfast too.We booked direct with the hotel and their website shows you some photos of the interior.

2 days should be good enough in Carcassonne. I%26#39;d recommend the Best Western Donjon les Ramparts (an affordable well-maintained centuries-old bldg. which is %26quot;inside%26quot; the old city walls). You may wish to spend your remaining time visiting further north in Rocomadour (%26amp; visit the fantastic nearby cavern called Gouffre de Padirac) or in one of the Black Perigord area villages like La Roque Gageac or Sarlat. If interested, check www.best-of-perigord.tm.fr ---or--- www.arachnis.asso.fr/DORDOGNE for further details. By the time you finish going thru these websites, you WILL now know %26quot;a lot%26quot; about France (or at least this area anyway). P.S. check www.carcassonne-tourisme for a lot of helpful Carassonne info.

Maggiemoon1. Five days is far too long in the walled city. Hire a car and travel. Narbonne is quite lively and you are close to coastal resorts such as Gruissan. Alternatively why not take in some of the beautiful villages in the area or places of historic interest, Lastours, Montolieu, Lagrasse, Minerve,

Thank you to all who replied to me. Sorry not thanked you all before - our computer was %26#39;poorly%26#39; and would not play. All sorted now! How did we manage before computers?? Anyway - I think that we will be taking your advice .... 2 days enough and then with the hire car - defo venture further afield. Good websites - thanks you.

We didnt go on any tours but there is a tour inside the old city. You pay to go around the walls and the museum and you can have a guided tour which you pay more for, and you can go along the walls.Try www.carcassonneinfo.com .
