the price for the excelsior seems right but since it says it is near the station i am afraid of the area. we will have a car and we will need the train to go to san remo. by the way are their trains all day to san remo or just a few a day?

Excelsior, Av Durante
In a bad area ? - depends if you are of a nervous disposition. It is not an area I would recommend. Not that anywhere in central Nice is actually dangerous, just a bit sleazy and its on the fringes of the arab centre around Rue d%26#39;Angleterre - a couple of streets away. What that means is a lot of men - young and old - hanging out in the street and doorways day and night, as is the culture.
I repeat I have no reason to consider it unsafe.
Car is a liability - little use to you in Nice, and usually expensive to park. You don%26#39;t need one unless you have a specific need.
Trains to Ventemiglia are fairly frequent - around one every half hour - and you can change there onto Trenitalia for San Remo - ten minurtes away. There are three or so International trains a day that run straight through from Nice to Milan stopping at San Remo, but changing is no problem and gives you more flexibility in times.
Cheers.

thank you so much for the advice. the reason i am renting a car is because i have two kids 9 years and 5 years and i thought that taking trains everyday to cannes, monte carlo, etc. would be too much of a hastle. am i wrong for thinking this way? plus i don%26#39;t know if it would be cheaper to go by trains and buses since there are four of us and the rate i am getting for the car is 57 euros a day. what do you think? i ruled out the excelsior hotel and now i am thinking of the la malmaison. is this a good choice? thank you so much. you helped me last time i came to nice also. bye.
