Chartres and Proust Museum

What is the best way to travel from Paris to Chartes? Also, has anyone been to the Proust museum in Ille Combray? If so is it worth a visit? thanks.

Take the train from Gare Montparnasse. Be sure to try to leave there by 10:00 am so you can take the Cathedral tour from Miller at noon.

Proust Museum is 20 km from Chartres. we had a car so I really don%26#39;t know to get there ? train or bus?

Here is a web site showing photos of the place:

Just a warning about visiting Chartres on Saturday. It%26#39;s wedding season and as such Mr. Miller may need to cancel his tours if there are several weddings on a day.

If you are a Proust fan, you should also check out his bed, which is in his recreated bedroom in the Musee Carnavalet.

and his grave is in Pere Lachaise

Proust museum... well, coming from Seattle, and even from Paris, I would not list this as a top interest place, unless you are an absolute and exclusive fan of Marcel. Très anecdotique! And not so easy to reach unless you have your own car.

Chartres is an underrated place that is really worth a visit, and indeed very easy from Paris, it is 1h by semi-direct train, and within a 10 minute walk you are in the old center.

Thankss for all the useful tips. I really do love Proust and would like to make it to Combray but I will not have a car and I am traveling with someone that doesn%26#39;t share my intrigue with Proust. However, my travel companion definately wants to see Chartres. Is it possible to make a day of it and get a bus or some sort of public transport and fit in the Proust site?

I didn%26#39;t know about the display in the Carnavalet...I will make sure to see it! I did manage to find his grave on a previous trip...that was a fun adventure. I couldn%26#39;t find it but this adorable elderly frenchman led me there...the only words we both understood was %26#39;Proust%26#39;!

You are lucky, there are even trains from Chartres to Combray! Easier than I thought.

The timetable I found on Combray city site is...for 2001 (…chez-alice.fr/Album/…page4_5.htm), however it gives an idea of the number of trains. Not so bad.

For up-to-date info, for the relevant day, just check the French railways website (www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvHomePage…) with a specific request on day and approximate hour.

As the destination, don%26#39;t write %26quot;Combray%26quot;, which won%26#39;t work, but %26quot;Illiers-Combray%26quot;.

What you could do is take an early train to Combray (compulsory stop of 10/15 minutes in Chartres, 2 h 1/4 total), visit in the morning (should be more than enough), then spend the afternoon in Chartres after a quick lunch there...

Enjoy your stay!

my husband is a passionate fan of Proust%26#39;s work and was once distraught when the Musee Carnavalet had closed the wing where the Proust room is on our visit --- it was to be highlight of the trip for him --

when I saw it I was underwhelmed, but then I am not the great Proust fan
