I an wondering if it is necessary to reserve this route ahead of time for travel in late July (height of tourist season). I have looked at routes on the bahn.de and SCNF Websites, so I believe a train is a viable option. Correct? I would prefer to not backtrack to Marseilles, but instead go along the coast from Cassis%26#39;s station, which also looks possible? SInce these are then regional trains, with no reservations possible (?) should I book online for just the ticket now? Lastly, I would love to see Antibes for several hours. Would it make sense to leave early in the morning from Cassis, stop in Antibes, and then continue on to Villefranche? There is so much I want to do during my stay there that seeing Antibes on the way seems like a good idea- but can I do that? Thank you, experts!

If you are taking a TGV between Toulon and Antibes it would be wise to book ahead as these can fill up, if you are only taking the regional trains then it will not be necessary
Seeing Antibes should be perfectly reasonable, it is a %26quot;good%26quot; walk from the station to the old town so may be a nuisance with baggage

Wow- thank you for that helpful and prompt response! That is a good point about the walk from Antibes%26#39; station to the old town and presumably beach. Although I travel with only a carry-on bag, still! In your opinion would it then be preferable to go to Antibes as perhaps an afternoon-into-the-evening local trip from Villefranche (is this doable by local train or bus?) while staying there? If so, your TGV reservation suggestion is helpful and I believe it would mean non-stop Toulon-Nice and then a transfer to Villefranche? Or, is the slower regional train enough along the coastline to warrant the scenic route? Merci!

Personally, I would just go Villefranche and make Antibes a day trip, its only about half an hour on the train.
From Toulon to Nice I would take the TGV, its only a couple of euros extra, it stops less, its more comfortable and the view is the same.

Thank you, yet again! I will take your advice due to the issue of hauling around my bag to and from the station at Antibes. You sound like a train expert! So if I can impose again, the narrow gauge train up into the Alps to Entreveux, from a different little station near the Nice train station, as a day trip also from Villefranche- is this something you%26#39;ve done personally or know of complications? Both Rick Steves%26#39; book and a post on the Fodor%26#39;s site make it sound easy to do, a 10-minute walk from the station where the train (or bus?) from Villefranche would drop me off. But is it?! You%26#39;ve been wonderfully helpful, thanks again!

Sorry my friend, I do consider myself a train expert, however I have never taken the narrow gauge railway

That sounds like an easy and very doable trip.
It%26#39;s not necessary to reserve on local trains but they do sometimes get a littlle full at rush hour, so try and travel at off-peak times.
If I were you, I would see if I could change from the TER train to a TGV or faster one at Toulon or somewhere like that.
TGVs stop at Antibes so you could get off there and have a walk around then hop back on a local train!
I love the comfy lazy feeling of those trains along that part of the coast. The service is frequent and efficient and you get lovely views as you travel as well!

Question re: Cassis to Nice via Toulon. Since I%26#39;m traveling on Monday morning - July 16, I want to book the train in advance taking the TGV from Toulon to Nice. But I can find only one way to do that from North America (Canada) -- through the Europe Rail site which charges an additional $20 (approx) to mail the ticket. That seems a little high and also I%26#39;m concerned I won%26#39;t get it before I leave on the 12th because I believe the tickets are mailed from the US and with the holidays this week, the mail may be slow.
Also, the site shows fewer trains than the sncf site but if I book through sncf, I can%26#39;t get a reserved seat. Additionally, I can%26#39;t figure out which trains are TGV and which, local.
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
