We had booked our hotel stay in Paris in mid-August at the Hotel Residence Henri IV and I just realized it doesn%26#39;t have air conditioning. I assume this is a bad idea. Does anyone have experience with hotels in Paris without air conditioning? Thanks!

That depends on your person. In Europe its very rare that people have AC, actually I never met anyone that did. But if you are sensitive for heat and use to AC have it, but else I think its enough to leave curtains down during the day and then have windows open at night when the temperature drops, I mean if it will get really hot in August, you never know. This is also more enviormental friendly. Have a nice time in Paris

I visited Paris at the end of July 2005 and we had AC in our hotel and it was a great relief after sightseeing in Paris after a long hot day and made sleeping more comfortable. You have to remember that many places in Paris are not airconditioned (metro, restaurants)- so you will not find relief from the heat during the day.

YES, A?C is crucial to me!!!!
First of all, opening the windows at night is often a noisey solution,, Paris is after all not the country side.
Also, after a day of walking around in 90 degree heat,,, a cool retreat can save ones sanity.
I too see many otherwise very nice hotels without A/C,, but in July and August,, I would not book them.
Yes,, I am not into alot of heat,, but I do travel to Hawaii and the Caribbean for holidays, so it is not like can only live in a fridge! lol Difference is those places tend to have sea breezees and lovely bodies of water for cooling off in!

You know this is why I changed my mind to go to Ireland in July and wait until September to go to Paris !! So many nice hotels and apparts do not have air conditioning !!!
Well, Paris weather is very fickle, and you may or may not need air conditioning in August. Lately, the weather has been very cool there !! But, if it were me, air conditioning in August would be like insurance in order to have a comfortable holiday !! I would go with a place with air conditioning UNLESS you just simply can%26#39;t find something reasonably priced available with it. Then you will be taking a gamble, but you just have to weigh your options carefully and sometimes a great place at a great price without air conditioning may be worth the risk.

I would have said no to this 10 years ago and then we spent a month in Paris including the first week of August in 2003 in an unairconditioned apartment (with great crossdraft and 6 French doors --) It was 103F and it didn%26#39;t cool at night -- really horrible. I would never book a hotel in Paris for August again without AC. It is why we travel in May.

ha, iblaurajc, if you have luck like I do......you will either pay extra for the AC and not need it, or take a risk to go without it and the biggest heatwave of the year will pass through. Yeah, exactly why I am flying into Ireland.
Gosh, that didn%26#39;t help you at all, did it ?? Well, maybe if you consider the best of the two scenarios above, it did.

I say YES get the airconditioning. We were there at the end of July 2005 and It was hot. It was really nice to go back to a cool room.

I also say YES, as summer became very hot in the last years, and it can be really hot in large cities (not even fresh at night).
This is my experience. I don%26#39;t have A/C at home as most French, but my apartment is very calm and I can open my bedroom%26#39;s window. I travel every week in Paris for business purpose, has to sleep recently in a hotel with no A/C as my usual hotel was fully booked. I had a room looking onto the road, it was both hot and very noising, couldn%26#39;t sleep!

One, word-YES!

One other word - No
Unless youre in temperatures where it will be constantly over 90 degrees f (as a minimum) I wouldnt bother. Unless youre really unlucky a hot spell only lasts a couple of days (I know I know, no doubt someone will say they were in Paris and it was unbearable for weeks on end, but that was a once in 10 years event, OK?). Most of the world manages to live and work without AC. I prefer hotels without it, and only book one if it%26#39;s unavoidable. I don%26#39;t like the heat (and believe me, having lived in western Queensland Australia, I know about living with no aircon in temps constantly over 100F) but it just aint healthy breathing all that dirty air...........
Judging by how this year has been so far, worry more about heating..........
