A few nights ago we dined at the Le Dome St. Paul on rue de Rivoli. After having drinks and dinner the waiter informed us that we had to give him a tip and that we must tell him the amount so that he could add it to our bill. I did give him 6 euros because he was young and friendly but did I do the right thing? Was he ripping me off? Should I talk to the manager or just let it go?
Thanks

Since you didn%26#39;t complain at the time, I%26#39;d forget about it. But the waiter was out of line. Service is included in the bill.

I was told by a French acquaintance that it was now the law that all service charges must be included in the published price in restaurants, bars and cafes. I%26#39;ve never had the courage to comply with this, but it is apparently illegal to ask for a tip or to imply that one is expected.

We went back to the same restaurant last night and had a different server, a female. She attempted to short us 10 euros. I waited for her to bring us our change and she never did. When I pointed it out she finally relented and gave us the 10 euro. A coincidence??? We will go back a 3rd time just to see.

It is true that service is %26quot;legally%26quot; included in the prices in France. So you are not obliged to give tips to waiters (they are regularly paid on a monthly salary basis, not as in the USA where what they earn is only the tips).
The waiter has been pretty rude to ask for a tip, that never happened to me, it is probably because you are american.
You are not obliged to, but if you thought the service was nice and helpful, you may give a tip, not as high as in the USA, for example the bill is 56.50 €, you give 60 € and say %26quot;gardez la monnaie%26quot; (%26quot;keep the change%26quot;).

Why on earth are you going back a third time to a place where the staff behave like that? Both the Marais and Paris in general have so many good, reasonably priced restaurants that you must surely want to try. By going back you are rewarding this restaurant for bad behaviour.
