Canal du midi--bicycling

I would like to spend a day bicycling along the canal--starting near Carcassonne. When I go on the web, I only find week-long tours of the area. It is possible to do? Are there bike rentals in the area? Is it worth doing? Thanks for your help.

When the canals were built in the 18th century, the barges were pulled by mules/horses; later by small locomotives. The tracks are no longer in place but the trails remain. Therefore it is indeed possible to bike the entire length of the Canal du Midi. It is probably much safer than biking alongside a roadway and the scenery is wonderful.

As for rentals, I am sure you can find bike rentals in Carcassonne. You may want to contact the Office de Tourisme for details.

The Canal du Midi is a wonderful stretch in which to enjoy a cycle ride. From Carcassonne bike hire is available from Evasion 2 Roues 0468 119040, their website can be found under www.af3v.org open 9-12 and all day Saturday and Sunday.
