My husband and I want to take our children aged 8 and 11 to Paris for a few days in February. We are considering hiring an apartment as it gives more flexibility with the kids (and we had a very successful apartment experience in Barcelona last year). Have seen a nice-sounding one in the Marais - but have been warned it is the gay area of Paris. Not a problem, but just wondered if really suitable for the kids - anyone stayed around there with a young family?
Views welcome. Jenny

Is there some reason you think it wouldn%26#39;t be an appropriate area for children?

It just happens that there are a some gay bars and clubs clustered in the area. As one other poster said in another thread, you%26#39;d probably not even notice it. It%26#39;s not like there%26#39;s a daily gay pride parade or anything. And even so...
If it%26#39;s s*x shops and the like that have you concerned, I%26#39;d say those are more in the Montmartre area or around Les Halles. (Man, TA is tough - I didn%26#39;t know you couldn%26#39;t use the word s*x!)

Jenny, There are not that many big parks in the Marais. I am not sure if that was the sort of issue you had in mind but if so, if you would like to be near a park, you might prefer the area near the Luxembourg Gardens.

we have stayed in the Marais and this isn%26#39;t an issue -- lots of boutiques, some which are camp -- but not a lot of gross six oriented stuff in windows --
it is a good area for strolling, interesting little restaurants etc -- good area

My husband and I took our three kids (ages 9, 12, 14) to Paris for a week at the end of July. We rented an apartment through www.parisluxeapt.com. If you look on their website, the name of the apartment was %26quot;Truffaut%26quot;. It is a 5 minute walk to Musee de Orsay and 10 minute walk to the Louvre. It is also close to two different metro stops. We travel quite a bit and are a bit spoiled so I was nervous about the apartment. It turned out to be perfect! The owners speak English and the superintendent next door was very friendly and accomodating. I would highly recommend going this route. One other note, the second best thing we did was hire a private tour guide, through www.parismuse.com, to take us through the Louvre. We had spent the previous week in London and our children were a bit tired of museums. Our guide was Kristen and she took us on the family %26quot;Muse Clues%26quot; tour. She was GREAT! She really made it fun for the kids which made it that much more fun for us. It was worth every penny!

We used Paris Luxe to book a different apartment in the Marais (their %26quot;Renoir%26quot; apartment) and had a horrible experience. Notwithstanding the slick website and promises of a %26quot;hand picked%26quot; apartment, they never told us our apartment was directly above a bar. In fact, the bar%26#39;s stereo speakers were mounted pretty much directly below our bed. We complained within hours of arriving yet Paris Luxe refused to do anything to live up to their guarantee. We were woken up repeatedly by music so loud, it shook the floor. I%26#39;m talking midnight, 3 AM - you name it. Plus the apartment had mold from water damage in the kitchen and bathroom, peeling paint, mildew in the shower....all for the sum of more than $6,000 for 3 weeks. Beware of Paris Luxe.
