where to visit in Normandy

I am planning a 4 day trip to Normandy in July, just wondered if you would have any advice of where is a good base for touring?

Many thanks

We stayed in Bayeux and found it to be excellent. Bayeux is a cute town, big enough without being too big. The tapestry is there, plus a very pretty cathedral. It was not bombed during WWII, so it is a very nice town, very intact. This made it easy to visit Mont St. Michel, and the D-Day beaches (these were our reasons for going there), and Honfleur. We were there at Easter, so we weren%26#39;t interested in a beach holiday.

If the beach is what you want, you might be more interested in the Deauville or Trouville area, or Ouistreham. These will be much more %26quot;hopping%26quot; and full of the %26quot;beach scene%26quot;. I would imagine in July they will be full of people!

Other cute towns that were on the water were Arromanches and Grandcamp-Maisy.

Practically every village we saw in Normandy was cute as could be. The whole area is very charming in scenic.

Dr.Debi made an excellent point regarding a visit

to Mont St. Michel. It is quite unique in many ways.

In terms of the Landing sites there is Arromanches,

any one of the five landing beaches, and numerous

memorial cemeteries. Make sure to stop at the

WWII Memorial Museum.

Hi.

We stayed at Houlgate which made a good base for exploring the D Day landing sites - Bayeux would also be good. Don%26#39;t miss the Peace Museum at Caen, %26#39;le memoriel%26#39;. The %26#39;cinema circulaire%26#39; at Arromanches is also unmissable, (and the Bayeux tapestry, of course!)

We loved Normandy and feel like you can%26#39;t go wrong anywhere you stay. We were able to visit the new visitors center at the US military cemetary which was just dedicated this June 6th and recommend at least two hours for a visit through it (plus then of course the cemetary visit and a walk down to Omaha beach--expect a good half day for the whole experience.) It was excellent and in my opinion much better than the peace museum in Caen.

I stay at La Ducrie (see this site for reviews). Good central location to Bayeux, Omaha Beach, Pont du Hoc, St Mere Eglise and St. Lo. Owners are very knkowledgable about the history and sites. Owners are British. The B%26amp;B is a 500 year old French castle.
