Camping in Brittany early June

Hi, For the first time my, a couple of friends and I are taking our car across to France and spending a week camping in Brittany.

First of all, can you just wander up to most campsites and hire a pitch or is it best to book in advance?

Is the driving easy enough once you have got used to being on the other side of the road? also is there any thing esle different from driving back home that we should be aware of?

And finally, what places should we not miss during out week. We like a mixture of places. Would like a few days staying in old towns with a good amount of history to see and quiet small bars/restaurants for the evening, and a few days doing the beach thing. Any reccomendations?

Hi there

In early June you should have no trouble just turning up to sites, especially smaller ones. Probably best to try to book pitches on, say, 3 or 4 star sites. Not sure where in Brittany you want to head but our favourite site is Le Ranolien at Ploumanac%26#39;h in Northern Brittany. Right near sea and LOTS of facilities. 10 minute walk to village with penty of good restaurants. Look it up on web.

Driving is fine, almost all junctions now have roundabouts, just remember %26#39;cedez le passage%26#39; means give way. If you are used to driving on motorways in UK you will be fine. We live in Jersey, Channel Islands where there are just small roads and we get on fine in France!

Again not sure where you are heading but try not to miss St Malo. Lovely walled city with hundreds of bars and restaurants and great beaches. We also love the medieval town of Dinan and you should see Mont St Michel! Beaches at St Cast very good. Lovely ancient towns like Rochefort, Quimper and Rennes. Your best bet is to buy a good guide book like Michelin green guides.

Have fun!

Hi Thanks for the info Jersey posts!

We have decided to head for Carnac for the the first couple of nights. Take in the monolith%26#39;s, go the beach, maybe a day trip to Vennes.

Following that a couple of nights at Locronan, where we can visit Quimper and the Crozon peninsula.

After that we are goinmg to spend the remaining 4 nights in Dinan, where we can go to Mont St Michel, Fougres Castle and forest, St Malo, Dinard etc.

Do have any reccommended campsites for these locations? we would like to be within walking distance of the restaurant/bar areas of the towns, preferably in campsites that offer some sort of shade.

Thanks

Hi

If you are travelling up to the Crozon Peninsula then I would suggest a look aroung Pentrez Plage on the Baie de Douarnenez. There is a campsite right on the beach. Pentrez has recently been placed in the top 20 beaches in the sunday times and really is a beautiful place with the back drop of the countryside. From here you can drive around the whole Peninsula - don%26#39;t miss the sailing town Morgat and those rugged cliffs.

Hello MB,

Carnac is a good location all the campsite are are around the town center. Pentrez is fantastic not far from douarnenez.

There are also a few music festival that you could look at.

I work in bath and I am from Brest, my girlfriend parents are from Thickwood if you want a few advise we could meet around a good butcombe at the 6 bells.

Take care

Eric

Have fun!! don%26#39;t forget to try the cider and the crepes!

small local restaurants serving lunch - look out for workmens vans / lorries etc - are very good value and generally excellent food. but the choice is limited to 2/3/ main courses.
