Battle of Tours/Poitiers 737 AD

I am trying to obtain information on the monument to this battle near Montgame. I need to know when it was erected? Who built it? How is it funded? Who maintains it? Why, considering the impoirtance of the battle and its outcome, is it so small when compared to other monuments in France? Thanks for any help.

I live between Tours and Poitiers, and I have never heard of this battle; nor any monument; so this posting intrigued me, and I started doing some research.

Most sources I looked at say the exact site of the battle is not known, whereas others place it at Moussais la Bataille, where the Clain joins the Vienne south of Chatellerault, and not far from Montgame.

The only reference to a monument that I could find is a chessboard at Vouneuil sur Vienne

Is this the monument you mean?

Yes. That is the battle site. I went to it earlier this month. It is listed by many historians, Creasy, Gibbons and some others, as one of the most impirtant battles in the world. Arabic historians agree and call it a disastrous battle for Islam. The ground at Mossai, hope I spelled it right, conforms to numerous accounts of the battle, although the memorial incorrectly shows it being fought on the small plain before it. Most military historians agree the battle took place on the low range of hills acorss the plain from the memorial. Those hill run along a river on the north. If you learn anything please let me know.
